Hi Stephanie! Welcome.

Ew. That sounds like a treat. What can be done to prevent powdery mildew? I've not had any experience with it. (Knock on wood.)

In my tiny, maybe 2' x 2' community garden plot, I learned the hard way that San Francisco fog is a great incubator for powdery mildew. My borage got covered in greyish mildew almost instantly. And it also self-seeded all over the garden, so the next season, everyone had borage! But at least the bees were happy (they love the flower nectar).

I have fond memories of the backyard garden in my last apartment. My thumb is as green as an elephant (not at all). But my girlfriend and I managed to grow (and not kill) fresh tomatoes and basil. Nothing fancy-- but great in a bowl of summer pasta.

Just found your blog and am really enjoying it! I'm jealous that my garden now consists of a second floor fire escape. :(
