Hi Andrea,
Your leaf looks like a Mulberry to me. Can you tell from this photo?
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/senior/fruits/mulbe3.htm

You could keep the leaf & chrysalis in an old fishbowl or something, putting in a twig for whatever hatches out to hold on to. If it's something good you could let it back in your garden.

Well, this seems to be the day for "Help me, what is this?" I did the very same thing with two mystery plants I am trying to identify!

I wish I could help. Sadly, I am (once again) clueless. But I'll be back to check in because I get every creature, plague, pest and disease known out here in rural Southern Maryland.

Sassy gardener - that cracked me up. I *do* have good hands and nails, if I may say so myself. It's genetics - my mom has nails that are as hard as, well, nails. And I've inherited those. Sometimes it's a pain - I have to use those big toenail clippers to cut through my fingernails!

Daisy - hmmm. That's what I was suspecting. I have a mind to put it in a jar (with holes!) and observe, like we used to do in school!

The fluffy cocoon -- moth, I think. I don't think it'll harm the plant, even though it's not very aesthetic. I've had other bug problems this year. Something is eating my hollyhocks, and it's not the rabbit.

While I apologize for not being able to answer any of your questions, the **real** question in my mind is how do you, as a gardener, have such beautiful nails and hands?!? I'm impressed.
