Pods, by Renee Garner

You may know Renee Garner, AKA Wolfie and the Sneak, through her weekly column, Petals and Pedals, at Modish. You may have seen her art for sale on the interweb, or read about her here on Heavy Petal. Or maybe you’ve been in Lila’s nursery and noticed the prints hanging on her wall (in that case, hopefully I know you). If you don’t know Renee, you should. She is an artist, crafty chick, gardener and all-round swell person.

Air plants, by Renee Garner

As of December 31, Renee is retiring Fungi and Pods from her series of posters, and she’s sending them out with a bang. One lucky reader will win his or her choice of two prints from the series, a quirky and colourful take on old school botanical prints.

Fungi, by Renee Garner

The prints are 13″x19″ on heavyweight matte photo paper and include the aforementioned Fungi and Pods, as well as the newest additions, Air Plants and Gastropods. Click here for a closer look at all four.

Gastropods, by Renee Garner

To win, just comment below, letting us know which two are your favourites. Who knows? You might win yourself a little holiday cheer! Thanks Renee for sharing your lovely prints with us!

Contest closes December 15, 2008.

  1. These are great. I had not heard of Renee before, but am glad I stopped by your blog today! I especially like the air plants poster, the yellow background makes it pop, it is my favorite by far. Fungi is my second favorite…no particular reason.

  3. Oh, those are so lovely. I love the Air Plants and the Pods posters the most, but they’re all beautiful.

  15. Hiya,

Have been reading your blog for a while – helping me while away the hours of a soon-to-be-finished dull job!

The pods and fungi prints are gorgeous.

  16. Comment by Rebecca - December 2, 2008
  17. Oooh! So neat! I love the pods and the fungi ones best, but they are all amazing!

  18. Comment by Carrie - December 2, 2008
  19. Fungi is my favorite hands down! Renee seems to have captured what these little treasure mean to me. Not only are they nifty to eat but they lie semi- hidden in forest and field waiting for the astute to admire their bizarre shapes and colors. Her placement of the elements on the page reflects the surprising nature of the fungi and (dare I say it?) puts the FUN back in fungi.

Pods would have to be my second favorite and again it is due to the subject matter. From the “traditional botanical” rendering of the individual pods one might expect them to be placed each on a separate page. Yet Renee has grouped them together to allow the eye to compare and appreciate the group as a whole while the mind takes in the individuality of of nature’s little packages.

    BRAVO!

  21. Those are neat! Fit for a new spin on A Modern Herbal by M.Grieve!

It’s hard to pick favourites out of those four, but because they are being retired, I’ll say Fungi and Pods :)

  26. Comment by Bethany - December 3, 2008
  27. Hello, My fave is the Fungi poster. I would love to win it. Here in the Pacific NW, fungi are obviously very happy! I have blogged about some real stunners that have popped up right around our place. Really been an eye-opener to discover, examine and research the little guys. Thank you! Bonnie

  39. The Fungi poster is very cool and could be the inspiration for many cheesey puns…”he’s a fun-guy” etc. Plus, my nickname in college was mushroom or chanterelle…need more art for the dining room, and this is AWESOME! Will be checking out more of Renee’s work. Thanks!

My favorites are Fungi and Gastropods. I like that the one letter in Fungi is different from the others….I don’t know but for whatever reason I just really like it…and I love the slug on the upper right hand corner in Gastropods.

  83. Mushrooms are one of my power vegetables.

About a week after completing a 3-day mycology course, I found a chicken of the woods on a large oak growing in the sidewalk along a busy parkway in Boston. I picked it, cooked it, and ate it. It was delicious!

  85. I like the pods and gastropods, but would be happy to get any of them, they’re all really fun.

  87. I would love to hang pods and fungi at my office! We are a nonprofit which certifies and does advocacy for organic farms, CCOF. The drawings are beautiful and we love having botanical references up on the walls.

  88. Comment by amandamaria - December 8, 2008
  89. “Fungi” and “Gastropods” are my favorites. I’m a fan of how she portrayed these delicate species with bold colors and heavy paper. The natural forms seem to pop right out at you!

By the way, I enjoy your blog from the States, and find your advice for small urban farmers to be inspiring and truly practical. Cheers!

  91. The prints are beautiful. They are most definitely works of art, if anything could be called that. I would love to have them. They would be beautiful to give to the rest of my very large family. They would love them, I know.

  99. I hate to be non-commital but do I have to choose a favorite? They each are beautiful and a little odd in their own way. If I win two I’m certainly buying the others so I can have a full collection! Thank you for introducing me to something so special.

  103. I heart the Fungi poster, and not just because my favorite joke is: So a mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says, “I’m sorry we don’t serve mushrooms.” And the mushroom exclaims, “But why? I’m a fungi.” And I also love the pods print because I am thrilled and amazed at how varied these little seed vessels are.
