Actually, the same thing happened to my mom’s bird seed one year. Turns out, if you have very messy birds and a lot of rain (and are a lazy gardener) you might have half your yard taken over by sunflowers, etc. Ah well, it sure is easier. Makes you wonder why we can’t get seeds to germinate when we WANT them to.

Oh my God..that is so cool..reminds me of last week I cleaned out my bird feeder and realized that a whole bunch of seeds had sprouted into a heavy mass of something! lol

Jaspenelle – I thought so too! I’m still mildly miffed that I “wasted” all those seeds, but they ARE pretty.

Meemsnyc – I didn’t really plant it, per say, but I placed it in the garden where I wanted it to grow and sprinkled a bit of soil over it.

Heidi – I wouldn’t recommend starting arugula this way, but I would recommend it any other way! It’s an awesome cool season green.

Toni@backyardFeast – Yikes! Oh, I would have been at my panic station, too. So, did drying them out work? (ie: did they germinate successfully afterward?)

I left my whole bucket of seeds out in the rain in the spring–panic stations at the time! I painstakingly spread each packet out to dry and even hand dried some seeds that were big enough. Now I wish I’d left some of them to sprout!

I was going to try planting arugula this year but just didn’t get to it. I never thought of starting them that way! :)

How wonderful! I love arugula for its unstoppable ability to achieve a really high germination rate under just about any crappy conditions… Your picture is a testament to its strong will!
