A truly portable garden

April 18, 2010 by Andrea Bellamy 7 Comments

truck garden

Found growing in the bed of our much-maligned but never-fail ’89 Nissan pick-up: one seedling of unknown creed, enjoying the leaf mulch being created as last fall’s leaves break down. Nature makes neglect a beautiful thing, no?

If we didn’t use the truck for hauling manure and moving friends’ boxes, I might consider helping nature along and turn the truck into a mobile garden.

Katie! So glad to hear you’re back in action. Are you feeling well?

Fern – I’m pretty sure it’s a tree. A seedling from one of the street trees it’s normally parked under. If I didn’t suck at tree identification, I could tell you what that is!

Love this idea. I wrote about Brooklyn truck farmers, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, in my story Brooklyn Farm Keeps on Truckin? who developed the Truck Farm Community Supported Agriculture Program: http://bit.ly/Uso7g
