Would you look at that craziness? Someone ought to get their plot under control.
Oh wait, that’s my whacked-out bed. The arugula is flowering and flopping, the radishes have flower stalks as thick as woody perennials, and the lettuce is so crowded it’s getting claustrophobic.
Despite the seeming neglect, I’ve actually been harvesting from this, my Salad Garden, regularly. I eat the arugula flowers and toss the elbow-room-only lettuces into salads almost every night. I have no excuse for why I’m letting those radishes grow into small trees, however. Oh wait, here’s one: I’m waiting for them to produce seed pods. Then I’ll eat those, too.
I’m also harvesting ‘Sugar Ann’ peas which I’ve let grow plump (I actually enjoy eating the shelled, raw peas more than the baby pods, I’ve discovered); ‘Sungold’ tomatoes, broccoli, and herbs.

This is the year of lettuce! I spread out my lettuce seedlings to fill holes & thought that I would blast through it all in time for me to reseed with carrots, beets & parsnips. Well, the lettuce seems to love this weather & are regrowing quicker than I can munch my way through it!! Oh, how I will miss all the greens come winter…

Lots of greens producing here (Calgary). I received the book One Magic Square by Lolo Hobein for my birthday. Great philosophy/message. 4 weeks ago I started a magic square (1m x 1m slightly raised planting bed) of early summer Asian Vegs (Diakon (18), Giant Red Mustard (15), Spicy Mixed Greens (lots), Garlic Chives (2 clumps), Choy Sum (40), Snow Peas (24), Scallions (12), Cilantro and an orphan marigold). It’s crazy and beautiful, already several big salads of spicy greens – arugula, mizuna, purple mustard, endive with garlic chives and lime/jalapeno/cilantro dressing. I’m hoping to pick/thin/harvest the square for lots of stirfrys, dumplings, diakon salads/pickles, green onions cakes, soups, noodles/pastas, cooked greens and more salads from this little plot – adding bok choy and tatsoi for the fall.

p.s. the California Spicy Greens seed blend (Rene’s Seeds) i bought in march in Vancouver at Art Knapp’s on Horby is so delicious. A new fave of mine.

Andrea! I also did not know you could (or, more to the point, would want to) eat arugula flowers! How do they taste? I would have assumed they’d be unspeakably bitter. You adorn salads with them? And…radish seed pods are edible? Are they tasty? Woman, you’re full of fascinating information!
